Members of the eastern-based House of Representatives (HoR) officially named al-Saleheen Abdul Nabi al-Abidi as the new Speaker, replacing Agila Saleh, who had held the position since the creation of the HoR 12 years ago.

This came after House of Representatives (HoR) Second Deputy Speaker Misbah al-Douma chaired a session on 5 October to change how the speaker is selected, at which MPs approved a plan limiting the speaker to a one-year term.

The session that saw Abdul Nabiโ€™s appointment also saw Misbah al-Douma re-secure his position as second deputy, while First Deputy Speaker Fawzi Al-Nuwayri, who said al-Doumaโ€™s 5 October vote bypassed procedures, lost his position to Tarek Al-Ashter.

This is a significant change, marking the end of the Saleh era and the HoRโ€™s full alignment with the Libyan National Army (LNA).
