Benghazi hosted the official launch of the O3 Group on Saturday, 17 October, marking what could become one of Libyaโs most consequential technology and infrastructure initiatives since the 2011 revolution. The occasion also marked the return of Dr. Faisel Gergab, former chairman of the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), to the forefront of the countryโs telecommunications sector.
O3โs ambitions extend far beyond introducing another mobile network. The group aims to establish an integrated digital ecosystem encompassing telecommunications, financial technology, cloud computing, international connectivity, infrastructure and education.
The initiative arrives as Libya continues to struggle with unreliable internet services, inadequate digital infrastructure and an economy overwhelmingly dependent on hydrocarbons.
Yet, what makes O3 particularly significant is not simply the technology it promises, but where it is being developed, the expertise behind it and what its success could mean for Libyaโs political landscape.
Building a digital ecosystem
O3โs business model centres on developing interconnected services rather than standalone telecommunications products.
