Anti-migrant rhetoric within Libya reaches new heights, as political leaders in both east and west stoke tensions. Increased anger over the presence of African migrants in the country has exploded within this past week, driven by false rumors spread on social media and on the Libyan street. This comes as international processes to try and resolve the national political divide continue slowly, with little visible progress.

Major Events This Week
- Protestors gathered outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) building in the al-Sarraj neighborhood of Tripoli, demanding an end to their presence in the country and to stop the “settlement of refugees in Libya”. Protestors even created earthen mounds in front of the UNHCR building to block the entrance.
- Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar and Deputy Commander Saddam Haftar met with a British delegation in Benghazi, consisting of British Ambassador Martin Reynolds and Defence Senior Advisor for Middle East and North Africa Admiral Edward Ahlgren. The meeting highlights the growing relations between the U.K. and the LNA.
- The 4+4 Committee, aka the “Mini-table”, met again in Tunis to “complete negotiations on the Electoral Commission and Electoral Laws”. The committee consists of representatives from the Government of National Unity (GNU), The LNA, the High Council of State (HCS) and the House of Representatives (HoR)
