El Obeid: The hinge of Sudan's war

After three years of brutal conflict, the war in Sudan has reached an impasse. Both warring sides are pretty spent and a first attempt at negotiations could be close. However the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seems to be building up its forces for one final offensive.

In the past weeks, a major buildup of troops by the RSF has been documented around El Obeid, the regional capital of the North Kordofan region, situated in the centre of the country. An attack on the city seems to be almost certain.

The RSF already escalated its drone assault on the city of El Obeid in the past days. RSF drones repeatedly targeted fuel depots in and around the city. One of the latest assaults on the night of June 18 hit the cityโ€™s main power stations, causing a city-wide power outage which forced medical facilities to close down.

Raging war between the army and top paramilitary

The war in Sudan has been raging for over three years now. What started in April 2023 as a power struggle between army leader Abdelfattah al-Burhan and RSF warlord Hemedti has escalated into one of the bloodiest conflicts of modern times, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese dead and millions displaced or at risk of famine.
