The thaw in UK-LNA relations

The United Kingdom has recently sought to reset its relationship with eastern Libya after years of distance.

The thaw in UK-LNA relations

British Ambassador Martin Reynolds held a series of meetings with Libyan National Army leadership, including Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, his son and deputy commander Saddam Haftar, and later Khaled Haftar.

It marked the first direct engagement of its kind by the newly appointed ambassador and a notable departure from Londonโ€™s long-standing posture.

For much of the post-2014 period, the UK maintained openly strained relations with the LNA, aligning instead with political authorities in Tripoli. London was an early and consistent supporter of Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba, backing his government diplomatically and in international forums, both publicly and discreetly.
