The Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Ground Forces, Saddam Haftar, hopes to reset relations with Algeria, one of the few regional supporters of the rival Government of National Unity (GNU).
Following successful engagements with Turkey and the United States, LNA Commander Saddam Haftar held secret meetings with Algerian security officials and began laying the groundwork for potential future talks.
Although Algerian influence does not weigh heavily on Libya, it remains one of the last few staunch backers of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and has so far perceived the LNA, which controls most of the contiguous territories with Algeria, as a strategic opponent.
Reestablishing relations with Algeria would therefore represent a major victory for the LNA and change regional geopolitical dynamics.
LNA commander Saddam Haftar secretly traveled to Algeria and met with Algerian political and security officials. Sources informed LIBYA DESK that the talks focused on building trust, with Saddam primarily seeking to initiate dialogue between the two sides.
