This report covers political and security updates in Libya between March 20, 2026 and March 26, 2026. Clients can download the full report at the end of the page.

Big-Picture Outlook

The world at large continues to be shocked by a global energy crisis, with Libya potentially becoming caught up in new geopolitical tensions.

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has caused oil prices to rise, leading countries around the world to tussle over this new status quo.

Recent internal incidents involving Libyaโ€™s weak and vulnerable energy infrastructure could demonstrate that the country is becoming yet another frontline in a widening energy conflict.

Major Events This Week

  • The price of tomatoes across Libya has quickly skyrocketed. This has caused growing public frustration, with local security forces attempting to force sellers to keep prices low. Despite rising oil prices, the dinar continues to remain weak against the dollar, weakening purchasing power and causing product shortages.
  • The abandoned Russian LNG tanker, the Arctic Metagaz, drifted within 40 km of the coastal Libyan city of Zuwara. Fearing that its contents could spill and cause an environmental disaster, Zuwara residents stormed the Mellitah Gas and Oil Compound and threatened to shut down production if the National Oil Corporation (NOC) did not deal with the tanker.
  • The NOC, in contract with Libyan and European companies, has pulled the Arctic Metagaz out to sea and is now beginning the process of safely unloading its potentially up to 62,000 metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas on board.
  • The U.S. Chargรฉ dโ€™Affaires for Libya, Jeremy Berndt, conducted a diplomatic visit to western and eastern Libya.
    • In Tripoli, he met with Government of National Unity (GNU) Minister of the Interior Emad Trabelsi and Minister of Foreign Affairs Taher al-Baour.
    • In Benghazi, he met with Libyan National Army (LNA) Chief of Staff Khalid Haftar and the head of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belqaism Haftar.
  • The United States has been trying to push forward political and economic negotiations in Libya, but has thus far failed to make progress.
