Big-Picture Outlook

Libya this week saw multiple security challenges, including infighting among security groups, attacks on southern border crossings, and the assasination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. The latter has cast a shadow on Libya, as the country continues to struggle with the legacy of the revolution, and the failed possibilities of the future, represented by its corrupt and rival governments. 

Key Highlights

  • Unknown gunmen assassinated Saif al-Islam Gaddafi after storming his compound in the city of Zintan. 
  • Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar and LNA Deputy Commander Saddam Haftar met with Pakistan Army Chief of Staff General Asim Munir in Islamabad, where the two talked about increasing military cooperation. 
  • Government of National Stability (GNS) Prime Minister Osama Hammad, alongside LNA commander Khalifa Haftar and LNA Deputy Commander Saddam Haftar, met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, and discussed increasing political ties.
  • Armed men, who self-identified as the โ€œRevolutionaries of the Southโ€ briefly captured the al-Toum border crossing between Libya and Niger from the Libyan National Army (LNA).
  • The LNA released a video, showing that they had recaptured the al-Toum border crossing, with LNA Chief of Staff Khalid Haftar giving an inspection of the site.
  • The Stability Support Apparatus, alongside the First Support Brigade, clashed with the 456th Brigade in the Sayyida Zeinab area of southern Zawiya.
