Big-Picture Outlook
Anger over the worsening economy is beginning to turn into protests, as small demonstrations across western Libya have called for the removal of both governments. Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba is seeking to modify the government in an attempt to reinforce his position, which is leading to renewed internal tensions within the GNU.
The House of Representatives (HoR) faces its own internal blame-game over rumours of a new import tax, while the Libyan National Army (LNA) is continuing to clash with militant groups in southern Libya.
Key Highlights
- Protestors held small demonstrations in the western cities of Tripoli, al-Zawiya, and Zlinten, calling for the downfall of both governments.
- House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Agila Saleh accused Second Deputy Speaker Misbah Duma of approving import taxes, while Duma denied that any taxes had been approved and they were only proposals.
- Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba has begun to replace multiple ministers within his cabinet.
- Presidential Council (PC) Chairman Mohammed al-Mnefi warned Dabaiba that any cabinet replacements need to go through certain legal proceedings, and too many changes could turn the GNU into a โcaretaker governmentโ.
- Four Libyan National Army (LNA) soldiers reportedly died in a landmine explosion, after their vehicle ran over the device in southern Libya.
- The LNA announced that it had conducted drone and airstrike attacks on southern militant groups in the south.
