Big-Picture Outlook
Libyaโs economy is rapidly worsening, and personal protests on social media are beginning to turn into public demonstrations. Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba traveled to Italy for medical treatment. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the United States continue to push their own initiatives in Libya. The LNA successfully conducted a counterinsurgency operation in the Libya-Niger border region.
Key Highlights
- The Libyan dinar continued to rapidly fall in value to the U.S. dollar, hitting around ~10.80 dinars per USD.
- Libyan media reported that the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) would levy new taxes on imports, but the CBL has yet to confirm this.
- The Head of the Economy and Investment Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR), Badr AlโNuhib, was removed from his position after committee members said he approved new import taxes with the CBL unilaterally.
- Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Dabaiba announced that while he was on travel to Milan, Italy for a โpre-existing external commitmentโ, he had received medical monitoring on his heart for two days.
- UNSMIL Special Representative to the Secretary General (SRSG) Hannah Tetteh delivered a new briefing to the United Nations Security council describing recent efforts to achieve its political roadmap.
- The LNAโs 604 Brigade captured a camp belonging to regional militants in the Libyan-Nigerien border area and released LNA hostages being held there.
