Big-Picture Outlook
The rapidly deteriorating state of the Libyan economy is leading to bank rushes, long fuel queues, and rising prices of goods. Libyans across the country are continuing to express outrage at the worsening economic and political state of the country.
Foreign countries continue to operate with Libya for personal gain, with the United States arresting a suspect in the 2012 Benghazi consulate attack and Italy reaffirming anti-migration efforts with Libyaโs rival governments.
Southern Libya continues to see a litany of security activity as the Government of National Unity's interim Military Chief of Staff attends a Saudi defense show.
Key Highlights
- The parallel market exchange rate has risen to around 9.5 Libyan dinars to the U.S. dollar.
- The U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had arrested Zubair al-Bakoush in Libya and transferred him to the U.S. to face charges in regards to the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
- Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi met with the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli and the Libyan National Army (LNA) in Benghazi, and discussed efforts to curb illegal migration in the Mediterranean.
- Interim Chief of Staff for the GNU Salah al-Namroush traveled to Riyadh, and took part in the World Defense Exhibition, where he met with Saudi Major General Mohammed al-Moghedi and Saudi Chief of the General Staff Fayyad al-Ruwaili.
- Nigerโs Ambassador to Libya, Amadou Mohamed Othman, met members of the Government of National Stability (GNS) in Sabha, where he reportedly congratulated the LNA on its work in securing the region
- A LNA medical helicopter crashed in the southern desert near Kufra, killing all 5 members on board, including two foreigners. It is currently unknown how the helicopter crashed.
