The Libyan National Army (LNA) sees a flurry of diplomatic action as western Libya faces a security reshuffle. LNA Commander-in-Chief Khalifa Haftar and his son Saddam met with both Egyptian, Algerian, and Sudanese officials, as the military body elevates its place on the North Africa political scene. Tripoli goes through another week of uncertainty, with territory changing hands in Ghadames and Nalut.

Key Highlights

  • Chinese chargĂ© d'affaires Liu Jian met with the House of Representatives’ (HoR) Speaker Agila Saleh in Qubbah and discussed recent political developments in the country. Liu also met with Development and Reconstruction Fund Head Belqasim Haftar and discussed “prospects for cooperation in the fields of development and reconstruction”.
  • Turkish Consul to Libya, Serkan KaramanlioÄźlu, met with Saddam Haftar and LNA Secretary-General Khairi Al-Tamimi in al-Rajma and reportedly discussed the opening of the new Turkish consulate in Benghazi.
  • The LNA’s Ground Forces Commander Saddam Haftar held secret meetings with Algerian political and security officials. 
  • The LNA and the Sudanese Army formed an officers-level working group in order to try and resolve tensions in the Sudan-Egypt-Libya border triangle. 
  • British Undersecretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Hamish Falconer, met with Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba in Tripoli and reportedly discussed the political situation in the country
