By acknowledging the importance of opening regional connectivity and introducing an American-Armenian agreement to develop the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) through an unspecified U.S. company, southern Armenia’s province of Syunik is to become the link between the Republic of Azerbaijan and its Autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan.

Commonly referred to as the “Zangezur Corridor”, the 40km land bridge that runs along the Armenian-Iranian border, will now allow the two Azerbaijani territories to be linked without relying on Iran for transit and provide a new link between Turkey and Central Asia, while potentially offering a novel relation for Ankara and Yerevan.

With an estimated cargo capacity of 15 million tons, the land bridge is a great addition to the budding Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), which until now ran through Georgia.

Nonetheless, before the “Zangezur Corridor” can become a reality for Eurasian interconnectivity, permanent peace in Armenia must be achieved and transport infrastructure - notably in Syunik - will have to be built.

Moreover, while the Middle Corridor is experiencing major cargo growth as it represents the quickest link between China and Europe (7,000km), it is dwarfed by the cargo capacity of the Northern Corridor running through Russia and its easier transit process despite the longer route (10,000km).

The agreement mediated by United States President Donald Trump has caused much geopolitical noise while its geoeconomic features were relayed in second place.

This is understandable considering how the traditional role of U.S. rivals Russia and Iran has been sidestepped in the South Caucasus, but it is far too soon to say that this development represents an irremediable geostrategic upheaval.
