Tripoli’s fragile ceasefire is maintained for another week, as international efforts continue to try to contain the crisis. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is working to maintain the ceasefire while also pursuing its new political roadmap. The Haftar family held meetings with both UNSMIL officials and the Greek government. The Libyan National Army (LNA) announced the completion of training programs with Belarus.

Key Highlights

  • UNSMIL head Hanna Tetteh and Deputy SRSG Stephanie Khoury met with LNA commander Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi. The two reportedly discussed the need to reduce tensions in the capital Tripoli. Tetteh and Khoury also held a separate meeting with LNA Deputy Commander Saddam Haftar and reportedly discussed the need to enhance the electoral framework and the importance of having the High Council of State and House of Representatives amend current electoral laws.
  • UNSMIL head Hanna Tetteh met with Russian Ambassador Aydar Aganin where the two reportedly discussed the current security situation in Tripoli and the new UNSMIL political roadmap
  • First-Deputy Speaker of the High Council of State, Hassan Habib, told Libyan media that the HCS is working on a committee report on how to best implement UNSMIL’s requests regarding the new UN roadmap and reviving the 6+6 committee.
  • Head of the Development and Reconstruction Authority Belqasim Haftar met with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, where they discussed increasing trade and economic ties.
  • The LNA announced the graduation of the “87th Rapid Intervention Battalion” from its year-long training mission in Belarus.
  • Deputy head of the Turkish Intelligence Agency, Cemalettin Çelik, met with officials from the Government of National Unity (GNU) as well as the Special Deterrence Apparatus, aka Rada, in Tripoli.
